Orchid Culture Advice and a Few Good Orchid Links
Below are four of the most readily available genera with links to the American Orchid Society's beginner culture sheets. At the bottom of the page are links to orchid 'hubs'...as well as a few sites that include orchid supplies and other interesting orchid information.

Cattleya (KAT-lee-ya)
Named in honor of William Cattley, an English Horticulturist during the 19th century. Cattleya species are distributed throughout mainland tropical America. This genus and hybrids with species of Laelia, Rhyncholaelia, Sophronitis and other related genera are easy to grow.

Dendrobium (den-DRO-bee-um)
Etymology: From the Greek words dendron meaning 'tree' and bios meaning 'life'. Species are distributed widely from India eastward to Japan and southward through the Philippines, Indonesia, They can be found from New Guinea to Australia and the Pacific Islands to New Zealand.

Phalaenopsis (fail-eh-NOP-sis)
From the Greek phalanina which means 'moth' and opsis which means 'appearance'. Species of this easy to grow genus are distributed throughout tropical Asia and the Philippines.

Paphiopedilum (paf-ee-oh-Ped-i-lum)
The name means Paphos, 'Venus' and pedilon, 'sandal' or Venus' slipper. Species in the genus can be found in the Asian tropics. Two related genera, Cypripedium and Phragmipedium have species native to North America and South American, respectively.
