On Friday night March 21st 2008 around 8 o'clock a fire occurred in my greenhouse.  We believe it was caused by one of the florescent lamps.

About 1/4 of the bench space was destroyed and just under 1/2 the plants were destroyed or damaged by the intense heat.  Working all night, I was able to get everything else inside before the cold damaged the remaining stock in the back half of the structure.

We cleaned up pretty quickly!  On Thursday April 17th, after being closed for a scant 26 days, I reopened the greenhouse to local walk-in business.  I arranged with Brennan's Orchids to keep a bench full of blooming Phalaenopsis available on consignment for customers who want a high quality alternative to our local hardware store's selection.  I offer a huge Thank You to them for these plants and for opening their greenhouses to my orchid refugees during the renovation period immediately after the fire.  The Brennans showed up with a heated truck as soon as they heard I needed help and their generosity helped prevent a much larger loss.  Good People.

In addition to the consignment Phals, the whole back half of my 3000 square foot greenhouse, which was untouched by the fire, is stuffed with clean healthy happy orchid plants just returned from Brennan's.  My own fragrant miniature Phal breeding lines are here and looking good.  Some are even in bud.

New blooming plants are starting to arrive, however at this point I have not yet had time to decide what to do with the empty space created by the fire, so when entering the greenhouse you will be met by a large, empty space in the front left hand side of the greenhouse equal to about 1/4 of the greenhouse floor space.  Ignore it.  Concentrate instead on the other 3/4 of the greenhouse; the part that is full of orchid plants.  That empty space won't be there for long anyway.  I may build an orchid display area with a pond!  I may rebuild my benches better than before.  I just don't know yet.

The mail order catalog will remain off-line for the time being, however, we are OPEN to walk-in customers again!  Check out our retail hours and please visit again soon.
